The Amargosa Valley Sand Dunes, Nevada
Updated: Dec 17, 2020
The Amargosa Valley sand dunes are a well kept secret off Hwy 95 in Nevada- roughly 30 miles south of Beatty. We had driven by them countless times in the past; either on our way somewhere, or on our way home. I had always wanted to stop there, but never found the time. This time, however, the kids noticed the striking dunes out in the distance and they wanted to go! We turned off the highway and headed for the dunes. The goal was simple. Get to the top of the highest dune!

As we drove towards the dunes, the firm dirt road quickly turned to soft, deep sand. We had to park a ways away from the dunes as to not get our truck stuck in the sand, then we were off on foot. It was over 100 degrees in the hot, Nevada evening sun and the winds were whipping; but we had a mission and the kids were excited to tackle their goal!

Within an hour we made it from our truck to the top of the highest dune. We were getting pelted by sharp, stinging pieces of sand, so we didn't stay long, but we were happy to get such a beautiful view of the great Nevada desert all to ourselves. There wasn't another soul in sight.

These dunes are a well kept Nevada secret that seldom see much traffic. If you choose to go there, which you definitely should, tread lightly. We have a duty to keep these places clean and safe for others to enjoy. These are the experiences that make motherhood the most joyous moments of my life. Being out in the wild with my children who are both so happy, curious and excited to explore the wonderful world we live in. It doesn't get better than this!
